Mac was one of the two puppies we kept from the litter, and from the beginning he felt like a little miracle.

He started life so small and fragile that I genuinely did not think he would make it. At one point he weighed only around 130 grams and his back legs were not working properly. Cherie poured a huge amount of care into him, and his survival remains one of the most emotional parts of the entire litter story.

As he grew, he also carried something of Simba back into the house. The likeness was not only in looks. There was something old in him, a sense of familiarity in both expression and nature that was hard to reconcile with the fact that the original dog who broke my heart had been gone for so long.

For six to seven years he gave us that extraordinary feeling - not that Simba had literally returned, but that some rare thread had run straight back through time and landed in front of us again.
