Papawai Puraz (Simba)
Papawai Puraz, known to us as Simba, was the foundation of Pride Rock Rottweilers.
Simba came from an older generation of New Zealand Rottweiler bloodlines with strong influence from historic kennel names and imported dogs that helped shape the breed during that era. His pedigree includes Rothgar, Gregarths, Kleinhans, and notable imports including NZ CH Upend Gallant Zeberdee (UK Import), NZ CH Gregarths Red Admire (UK Import), Bragi Poetical Justice (UK Import), and Kleinhans Tango Bara (Import Aust).
These lines reflect a pedigree built from respected New Zealand breeding stock alongside influential UK and Australian imports. Our research also indicates Papawai Puraz was part of the mid-1990s Papawai kennel line, with related dogs such as Papawai La Petite and Papawai The Prodigy appearing in pedigree discussion connected to the same family of dogs.
Beyond the pedigree, Simba was simply an exceptional dog. He had the strength, character and presence that stay with you long after a dog is gone.
After losing him, we preserved his frozen semen. At the time, it was less a breeding decision and more an emotional one — a way of holding onto the possibility that some part of him remained. For years we believed we might never use it. In fact, a large part of us felt he should simply be left in peace.
Eventually, through our girl Horowai, we made the decision to try. That breeding was successful and produced the Pride Rock litter — one of the most meaningful experiences of our lives.
Because Simba’s semen was preserved many years ago and successfully used later, it may represent a rare preserved example of this historic pedigree in New Zealand today. We cannot say with certainty that no one else retained semen from similar lines, but it is reasonable to say that preserved semen from this older pedigree generation is likely uncommon.
For us, this page is not just about a stud dog. It is a tribute to the dog who started everything.
Simba - Papawai Puraz - Preserved Bloodline
Papawai Puraz, known to us as Simba, was the dog who started everything.
He was not only a much-loved companion, but the foundation of the line that later became Pride Rock Rottweilers. Long before we knew whether we would ever use it, we made the decision to preserve Simba’s semen. At the time, it was as much about memory as it was about breeding.
Years later, after a great deal of thought, we used that preserved semen with our girl Horowai. The insemination was successful, and the result was a litter that meant more to us than we could have imagined. It gave us the rare chance to carry forward a dog we had lost many years earlier.
Simba’s pedigree is tied to historic show lines, including strong Rothgar influence and notable UK and Australian imports. That history matters, but even more important to us was the dog himself - his expression, his substance, his character, and the bond he created.
What made the experience even more extraordinary was that one of the male pups we kept carried so much of Simba in both look and nature. He felt like an old soul from the beginning and, in many ways, was the closest thing to seeing part of Simba return.
Today, this preserved line remains part of the Pride Rock story. Whether or not it is ever used again, it stands as a rare and meaningful link to the past.

Pride Rock Kennel is a small hobby kennel located in the North Island of New Zealand. Our Kennels line is based on our beloved stud dog Papawai Puraz (Simba). Having the foresight to freeze his semen 15 years ago we are reintroducing a U.K. line that notably includes 2nd generation U.K Import NZ Ch. Upend Gallant Zeberdee imported to improve New Zealand's reputation for having Rottweilers with weak heads and small ears. Outlined in Les Price, author of Rottweilers: An Owner′s Companion.

Papawai Puraz (Simba) attended the Central Rottweiler Club, he was the highest scoring obedience dog the club had at the time, scoring 97 ½ out of 100 in Grade 3 proving to be a highly intelligent dog.

Papawai Puraz (Simba)
Simba was the foundation of Pride Rock Rottweilers.
His pedigree included Rothgar, Gregarths, Kleinhans and several UK and Australian imports,
reflecting historic New Zealand breeding lines.
After his passing, his frozen semen was preserved. Years later it was successfully used to produce the Pride Rock litter through Horowai.
This preserved semen represents a rare surviving example of that earlier generation of NZ Rottweiler bloodlines.

We are currently looking for a prospective (female), the bloodline, and hereditary tree will be checked for inherited conditions that may affect the litter, e.g. genetic testing along with the standard temperament, hereditary and ancestry, genetic diversity, conformation, and other standard health tests include hip dysplasia, eye conditions, etc. Also, DNA fingerprinted before insemination. Our stud dog lived to a ripe old Rottweiler age of 12 1/2 years. As a lover of the breed, we believe any litter should improve on the breed.
